Summary:
Just got back last night from a three-day weekend here. Snow was well maintained hard pack that softened up during the mostly sunny days, making off-piste skiing technically challenging and fun. Tremendous modern high speed lift system all over the mountain, it's nice to see an area that puts its profits back into the area for our sake. Apres ski scene is a good blend of food, drink and dance, with an open square where most of the bars are that gives us non-smoking americans a break from the nicotine fog still found in most bars in europe. Weekend was topped off by a 90 monute Sting concert that was free to all lift ticket holders - nice touch by a great ski area, easily on par with the best the USA can offer. Can't wait for next year!

Summary:
This is a prototype tyrolian ski resort. E. g. Vail is in many ways a copy of Ischgl. Ischgl village easily beets Vail however: great party, much more scenic Silvretta Alps in the valley (The valley Patznauntal where Ischgl is located is so steep and high, that during high winter season no sunray hits the village) and on moutaintop. Slope preparation was excellent by the time i was there. No real challenging stuff around however.
Ischgl apres-ski is legendary in Europe. Alcohol is a problem however, many "skiers" begin partying on the hats by the afternoon. I had to pull over to some people in the late afternoons realizing that they where hanging aroung just drunken. Once back in the village, when you enjoy the first beer of the day (aahh!), most chicks are already too drunk to f***. Austrian beer tastes horrible BTW, but you can get german beer as well.
Avalanches are a big issue in this area. As long as you stay on the slopes it's no problem. Off-route skiers and boarders get killed on a regular basis there. And in a record setting winter like '98-'99, where snowfall was far beyond normal, you might get into the Patznauntal, but be prepared that you might get evacuated by helicopters after a couple of days of isolation. In these terms passing the avalanche checkpoints on the road up there give an extra thrill to the trip...
