| | Reviewed by: Mat, Intermediate, from London, UK Summary:
Despite its size and poor nightlife (one "disco", playing a grim selection of early-eighties pop), Achenkirch is a great place for adventurous beginners and intermediate skiers and boarders. It's especially good for families too, with plenty of facilities for kids.
Watch out for the inconsistent piste signage (which doesn't agree with the piste maps, either). The map shows several blue runs, which are marked as red on the piste itself (and seemed more like reds to me). Then there are a couple of reds with black sections and blacks that should be red.
Several pistes cross drag-lift runs too, for an extra dimension of interest.
For snowboarding, Achenkirch okay, but far from brilliant. There is one half-pipe (badly cut and maintained), located right under the main chairlift and so low that it gets slushy *very* quickly. When we were there, there was a fairly steep boardercross track too (also under the lift, with pylons providing an "interesting" hazard).
The drag lifts are all T-bars and a couple are long enough to be quite uncomfortable for boarders (10 mins or so). The longest has a sheer drop to the right and steep banks on the left - goofy-footers watch out!
But ... if you go to the top you'll find some decent red and black runs that can be followed all the way to the bottom of the hill and provide challenge enough for most intermediate boarders.
Achenkirch is popular with Dutch and Germans mostly, so English isn't widely spoken.
Overall, I liked the place. It's fun, cozy-small and friendly. If you don't like crowds and aren't a downhill-hero, maybe you'll like it too.
