I have also been skiing at the 7 laux and chamrousse near Grenoble. If the 7 laux is the best for snowboarders and more advanced skiers, chamrousse and Villars are about the same size. I love Villars, it is a very beautiful place (don't feel as close to the Grenoble as chamrousse) and not crowded.
