Summary:
Classic resort for the Great British piste basher. Anyone with a couple of weeks experience can cover big distances here. France has the best lift systems in the world - there are no arguments about that.A red run skier's paradise. Nothing is that tricky here in this valley. A great place for carving. Because you are central you have easy access to Courchevel(which I prefer) and Val Thorens on either side.I have stayed in Meribel itself and also Mottaret. It is a chalet resort.I usually pick up last minute bargains. I save money and I know what the snow is like. Only time I pay brochure price is if I go with a big group. I don't know what this place is like if you don't like chalets. French hotels are too dear in the big resorts. That only leaves self catering. You can have a really great, inexpensive holiday in Meribel. People knock it and go on about far off places but I think that is just oneupmanship. Nowhere in the world has massive resorts like this, that you can ski so cheaply.I can get a week's holiday (flights, accommodation and food)for the cost of an air fare to Salt Lake City and lift pass prices make US seem a rip off.I 've skied US, Canada, Switzerland,Austria, Italy, Andorra etc. They all have their strengths but the big French resorts win every time.
Brits might be jaded because they hear Brits all around them and feel that they have not really been away. Yanks don't come here because they like pretty, traditional resorts and are suspicious of the French anyway. Americans are great salesmen and hype up their own resorts. French don't bother. They know they have the best product. The French never ski any place else and why should they ?

Summary:
Meribel, part of "Les Trois Vallees" is the more "dressed up" and modern of the "triad". Lodgings here, especially holiday and peak season, can be exhorbitantly expensive. Look for lodgings down the "valley". Take the gondola up/down this valley; it makes stops along the way at different communities.

Summary:
Meribel is overrated and full of English snobs. The three valleys is a really nice area but there are much better places to stay.

Summary:
I worked there for a season and totall enjoyed it, but having done three seasons in Val disere, i think you can not beat Val, but Meribel comes very close. Meribel is a very pretty resort, and very friendly (all nations). And yes I do have the receipe for toffee vodka having spent 3/4 hours a day for 6 months making it, but it costs alot?
