Reviewed by: mountainfreeride, Advanced, from Thorpe Bay - England

Price Paid: $0.00

Summary:
Small, unspoilt lapish ski/board area. If you’re into mileage and big mountain riding then you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you’re after something a bit different with a unique feel to it, then Yllas is the place to head. The only way to describe riding in Lapland (ski and board), is it’s like the moon. These aren’t mountains, they’re known as fells and the highest lift takes you to a dizzy (!!) 718 metres above sea level, that said though, the surrounding land is totally flat and covered in pine forests and dotted amongst them are smaller groups of fells. Although only 718 metres high, you can see for miles on a clear day.
Runs here are short compared to France and the more mainstream resorts, but I kid you not when I say crowds are non existent. I went for 8 days in February, loved it so much I went back for another 10 in mid April the same year, even in April with the Finish college holidays it was still wonderfully deserted. It was common place in Feb to be completely alone with your friends whilst on a run. Off piste is dangerous in poor snow as rocks are numerous and sit just under the surface invisible to the eye, with good snow though there’s a fair bit to do. This is a great place to learn about off piste techniques, it’s even possible to walk to a neighbouring fell and put in some freshies and end up back at the main lifts. Great resort for learning and perfecting techniques. Snow quality was ok in Feb and absolutely amazing in April, I was in fresh powder that you’d normally only find off piste at 10,000ft + ! Only downer are the T-Bar lifts, that’s all they had when I went….aaaarrggh !!

Summary:
The best skiing resort in Finland if you really want to ski - if you like to party go to Ruka or Levi instead(better after ski). Check the snow conditions before going there if you are seeking some off-piste skiing, the terrain is fairly rough (plenty of rocks) which can ruin your gears.
