Summary:
Magic went bankrupt in the late 80's and was closed for quite a while. It's now reopened, and it's like a gem that got forgotten for a long time. ($20 Tuesdays - how cool is that!?)
Yes the lifts remind you of the late '70's, as they're old and slow, and when they stop they bounce and go backwards - one of those nostalgic things you're happy to forget, and the base lodge is a bit "challenged" in light of the new millenium. But if you're going for base lodge ambiance and whatnot, go to Stratton and parade with the other losers in their shiny new duds, and ski their "black diamonds" that have the vertical drop of a pool table.
When Magic gets a snow dump, go directly to the resort, get on one of the main chairs that have the old steel safety bars (HEAVY!) and have a ball. The terrain is great for such a small area, and you can't help but have fun, unless you're one of the aforementioned losers.
Steeps, chutes, trees, whatever you want it's at Magic - a great place to tune up before heading West.
Yes it's sort of small, the snowmaking is minimal, and the lifts are slow, but when there's a snow dump, you can have more fun and memories here in a day than in an entire season at wastelands like Okemo, Bromley and Stratton.

Summary:
I got the chance to ski Magic for the first time last year. After a few visits I was hooked. I hope to get a season pass next year. The combination of a relaxed atmosphere, uncrowded slopes, challenging terrain, and affordable lift tickets is hard to find elswhere ont he east coast. It's often called the Mad River Glen of southern VT. You owe it to yourself to make a visit!

Summary:
Magic is a new england classic. Nice fall line trails with natural hazards. Trails are not too narrow but twist all over the mountain. Sure the chairs are old and slow but it keeps the crowds away and the snow in good shape - can get icy.

Green trail magic carpet from summit is blugreen - poor signage can lead novices onto some steeps.

Summary:
This is a place to go after a large storm. It is uncrowded and has great terrain. On other days go to nearby Stratton, Bromley or Okemo. Stratton for a bigger but crowded mountain, Okemeo for well groomed family runs, and Bromley for easy access and a less hectic day. Call ahead or check the internet to make sure it is open.

Summary:
I used to see the signs for Magic on the way to Okemo and Killington and I always wondered what it was like. Now I know. When natural snow conditions are good, there's no better place to be. On a powder day, spread your wings and fly. A foot and a half of fresh on trails like Redline (don't miss the waterfall to the right of the lift tower just above the entrance) can make your winter. It did mine :-)
