Awful Experience
Oct. 6, 2002 15:26
Rating: *
We visited Ascutney Mountain Resort this past weekend (10/02) with the intention of looking at a condo for sale at the ski mountain. The hotel was AWFUL: our "Windsor" room was covered with flies and the maids did not provide room service. The restaurant food was poor and we were the ONLY people there, which should have told us something. We decided to leave a day early because the experience was so awful for us and our kids. We did show up for our appt. to see the condo because we felt we should go if we drove 3+ hours to see it. We waited 20 minutes for someone to show up, which no one did. Upon check-out, an exceptionally rude staff person (Spencer) decided to charge us double the room rate they quoted us because we didn't look at the condo - the same condo appt. we were there for but the staff didn't show up. They would not allow us to speak with a Manager or anyone who could help us resolve the issue. The staff was beligerent and disrespectful. We called local police because they charged my credit card without my permission before we resolved the dispute. The police got our charge slip back for us and we placed a formal complaint. We learned from local police that we were not the first people to have a VERY BAD EXPERIENCE WITH THIS RESORT. BE VERY CAUTIOUS!!!

Summary:
A fun upper-intermediate mountain... I'm not sure why Ascutney is rated so low on this board. Although I wouldn't classify it as a "destination mountain," if you're travelling from NYC to Jay, Sugarbush, Burke, or MRG, and don't want to waste the entire day in the car, it makes a nice stopover/warm-up.

Summary:
although there is realay five or six main ways down the mountain, the trails all have a great pitch. trails are narrower, twisting and more interesting than its big neighbors. Lots of shorter connector trails between the main runs. No runouts here. Beginners should ski off the sunrise lift. there is no easy was off the summit. Cloudspin is a solid blue trail, not green. Intermediates have the whole mountain. experts have the tough liftline run, a few glades nad soem good pitches on the west side of the hill to keep your interest.

Reviewed by: Justin, Advanced, from Manchester, NH

Summary:
Ascutney is definately in need of a high speed lift, which they plan on having for next season with another 300 feet of vertical. The mountain has some pretty sweet terrain considering it only has like 1500 vertical. Some trails are steep and relatively challenging, and the lfit lines are non-existant, even at holidy times. Even witht he slow lift, its possible to get 30 runs in, hopefully even more with their new quad. If youre in the area, and just want to ride(pipe and park sub-par at very best) , and not deal with Okemos crowds its not a bad mountain to visit.
