Summary:
Purgatory is great for a few days. close to the high desert - mesa verde and hovenweep (national park units) an easy day trip. Trimble hot spings is nice too. Take a scenic drive to silverton on a dry day - saw lots of backcountry skiers - nice alpine.

avoid staying at the iron horse inn - an armpit

Reviewed by: Justin Smith, Beginner, from Peoria, AZ

Summary:
You'll see that the weaknesses I listed relate to some of the ancillary facilities. While these are important to most people, we went there on a budget, stayed far away from the resort, and brought our own food. However, if we were to stay near the resort, the choices would be limited and very expensive. I've never been to a ski resort before this, but I thought there would be more restaurant choices than the two or three that were there.

Now, the good stuff. My wife and I had never been on skis before or even visited a ski resort. We were VERY happy with the experience as beginners. We took the introduction to skiing class in the morning and everyone there was extremely helpful. I had at least three people come up to me asking me if I knew what I was doing or needed help. They were even asking if I had sunblock and offering me theirs. We were expecting some snotty "ski dudes" that would treat us like idiots because we had no idea what we were doing. We were happily shocked at our reception.

The class was very instructional and well paced. We were give the class and an all-day lift pass to the bunny slope for $35 each. For a beginner, this is a fantastic deal.

Overall, we were nervous about being laughed off the mountain, but were warmly welcomed. We had a blast learning slowly. Our experience has convinced us to come back when we have more money to really experience all the resort has to offer.

Summary:
I really love skiing and I would put Purgatory second on my list with Jackson Hole at the top. If you are a beginner you should go to Purgatory and if you like the more black and harder runs you should go to Jackson Hole.

Summary:
Purgatory is a great place to make that transition from beginner to intermediate with some advanced mixed in. The snow was great one year, so-so the next. Lift lines are not too bad and there are enough trails to dilute the crowd. Cathedral Tree Run after a snow dump is second-to-none for glade skiing. Some of my best memories are from Purgatory. Like I said, experts should head to places like Taos or Jackson, but greens and blues will love it.
