Summary: I am from Ontario so for people from the East wondering where to go to ski in the West...I would put Mammoth high on the list. My recommendation..5-7 days in Mammoth and then drive to LA for a few days before heading back home. Thats the trip we will be doing in March this year. My one and only trip to Mammoth was a side trip there for one day while we were in Tahoe for 10 days..well worth the drive. It was stormy when we got there so all th eupper mtn was closed...but the place was empty adn i ha dth elower mtn to myself...stuck quite abit to the trees on chair 9 and 25...not very steep but that alllowed you to ride them w/o hesistation about whats around the next tree. I have riden enuf resorts to know how to rate them based on the mountain itself...I had lotsa of fresh snow in the trees which is a plus...like all trips if you get there and there has been no fresh snow in awhile it sucks..likewise a small resort can be awesome after a dump. But I realised in that one day that Mammoth is an awesome playground for all levels and with the ocean only hours away...it keeps the whole family happy..thus we are going back for more in March. I will also be ducking over to June Mtn for a day while there.
As far as value...its on par with all major resorts..Whistler, Park City etc etc

Summary: This is the resort to go if you want to have lots of fun. This is by far my favorite mountain in CA, even Tahoe cannot compete with it. It is however kind of pricy, but justifiable when you realize how much you enjoy the day skiing. The foods in the lodges are reasonably priced compare to other resorts. It does get crowed during holidays, but still a lot better (shorter lift lines and food lines) compare to other resorts in CA.
Living only one and half hours away from Tahoe, I would rather spend more money to ski 3 days weekend in Mammoth. You cannot get bored of the mountain.

Summary: Huge mountain. Gets dumped on with snow, but like any place can get icy. Waste of good vertical (3000'+) since you'll spend most of your time skiing half or less of the vertical. Lots of wide open, straight, snoozer trails. Can get extremely crowded and is not cheap ($60 for adult lift ticket). Night life is essentially non existent.
